Australia anti-terror police detain 7 men as country lays youngest Bondi Beach victim to rest
Australian police have detained seven men during anti-terror raids in Sydney on Thursday as the country lays to rest the youngest victim of the deadly Bondi Beach attack.
The massacre has prompted a national reckoning about antisemitism and questions about whether the country’s leaders took seriously enough the threat to Australian Jews.
In the first full day of opening since a mass shooting driven by antisemitism killed 15 people at Australia's famed Bondi Beach on Sunday, thousands of people returned to the waterfront Friday to commemorate the losses and try to heal through a sense of community.
The Australian government is "prepared to take whatever action is necessary," after the shooting at Bondi Beach, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
Hundreds had gathered for an event at Bondi Beach called Chanukah by the Sea, which was celebrating the start of the Hanukkah Jewish festival.
At least 15 people were killed and dozens of others wounded on Sunday in a shooting at the beach, the police said.
For many, official promises to stamp out the “evil scourge” of antisemitism and consider further tightening gun control measures come too late.
